Player Experience: VJTC 2024

The club managed to send a team to the annual junior teams championships early August. We were hoping to send two teams, one under 11 and one under 13 however, due to shortage of players, we ended up combining the players to make up an under 13 team to be played in division 1.

The team (pictured above): Nithik (staff), Ky-Zen (12yo), Abigail (12yo), Victoria (11yo), Vicky (staff), Sujoy (9yo), Rishi (10yo), Monica (staff). Karyna (9yo) absent.

We asked two of our players to share their experience at the event as first time competitors.

Ky-Zen: The teams event was a thrilling and joyful experience filled with so much skill and excellence. However, I could not have stood a chance against many of these players without the coaches' help.

The training that I have experienced so far is some of the most enriching and resourceful I have seen so far. Vicky works hard to ensure we work hard, whilst also ensuring we cover as much training as possible. Even with Nithik coaching alone, the quality does not drop. He always picks out my mistakes, while also giving praise when needed. He also works hard to ensure we are all giving 110% when practicing, and is excellent when correcting technique, demonstrating and explaining routines thoroughly.

All in all, this training is one of the best and most effective way to get a good grip on badminton, and also if you want to begin playing competitively.

Abigail: Last Sunday (August 4th) we went to MSAC to play a teams event. We had to verse many players with some having represented state or had more training than us so our team obviously came last.

The event lasted from 9am to 2pm. One of our friends and team mate didn't turn up and bailed on us! As a result, I was very nervous about the event because I also didn't want to lose. Our coach Vicky said it was fine, even if we end up getting zero points. We just had to try our best.

The coaches ensured us that it was the experience that is most important. I didn't think so as I only got 2 points in my singles while my friend and team mate got 1. Then we played our doubles and we lost that one as well. And in my mixed with Ky-Zen, I got hit on the collar bone and in another match, I got hit in the face by my opponent. Apart from all that, it was actually pretty fun.
