Annual Report 2023

Updated: Nov 25

last updated 16/6/2024

Committee: Monica Chen (Secretary/Treasurer), Natalie Tan, Victoria Na (President/Secretary)

BAV Australia Inc. acknowledges the Aboriginal people as the Traditional Owners of this land and we pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

We would like to thank our sponsors:

Why we exist:

  • promote the sport badminton

  • encourage kids to play the sport badminton

  • support club members in their badminton journey

President's Report

Thank you to our major sponsor Rutland Specialist Clinic (2021-2023). They contributed total of $3300 in the three years with us, with those funds going to club apparel.

Our goals for 2023:

  1. Improve member experience

  2. Expand member support

  3. Host 2x tournaments

  4. New club sponsor

How we did: Member count - 37

2x members were part of the club sponsorship deal

2x members were High Performance members

2x members were committee members

31x members attend lessons on a weekly basis

What we have offered in the membership:

  • shirt

  • 2x complimentary restringing service

  • subsidised lessons

  • complimentary holiday lessons

  • financial aid for high performance members

We are proud to be able to provide these services for our members as we believe are essentials to a badminton player and that's what sets us apart from other clubs.

High Performance members:

Louisa Ma - national and state representative

Vincent Lawrencio - state representative

We have been giving them financial aid to support their badminton career, covering all their entry fees and partial coverage of their accommodation and flights.

Louisa Ma's achievements:

  • Aussie Falcons national squad

  • State squad

  • State team representative at Nationals

  • BV Elite Series 1 tournament women's singles winner

  • National championships women's singles runners up

  • BV Elite Series 3 tournament triple runners up

  • Bendigo International tournament mixed doubles quarter-finalist

Vincent Lawrencio's achievements:

  • State squad

  • BV Elite Series 1 tournament mixed doubles quarter-finalist

  • BV Elite Series 3 tournament mixed doubles runners up, men's doubles semi-finalist

  • Bendigo International tournament mixed doubles quarter-finalist

Looking back at our 2023 calendar, we definitely pushed the boundaries financially. We hosted three tournaments without any sponsor help which was challenging and very ambitious of us considering how much money we would lose due to having no sponsor or financial support. However, the committee and volunteers enjoyed the experience and appreciated the support from BV and the wider community.

Club things:

Online presence - Our Instagram account now sits at 339 followers, a 9.36% increase from 2022. The majority of the new members found us via Google search so having a well-designed website that is informative and easy to navigate was critical.

New High Performance member Vincent Lawrencio - It was great to have another high performance player join the club. We hope to retain their membership for the rest of his badminton career as well as Louisa Ma's membership.

Under 9 teams event - This extra event was held on the same day as BV Junior circuit tournament at Kilsyth. Ranging from beginner to intermediate level, the young players were full of enthusiasm, where both the players and spectators were entertained. The event attracted other clubs to enter which was great as we were assuring that the event was a platform for new players to have a go at the sport. It was also an opportunity for some of our members to volunteer, facilitating and keeping the players engaged. Feedback from the parents and spectators were positive, proving the opportunity for us to host similar events in the near future.

Expanding member support - Majority of our members were juniors and attended the lessons regularly. The goal for this year 2024 is to increase member count and add another tier of support.

High Performance members

Members

Conditions: state and/or national representative

What we offer: - shirt - 2x restringing services - financial aid for tournament entry, accommodation and/or flights

What we offer: - shirt - 2x restringing services - subsidised lessons during term and school holidays - financial aid for tournament entry

Purpose: High performance members tend to already have training provided for them. As a result, we provide financial aid to cover some if not, all of their badminton expenses.

Purpose: Most of these members are juniors attending lessons. In order to increase member count, we have included full subsidy of tournament entry fees.

Treasurer's Report

In order to provide for our members, we need to up our revenue. We managed to host three tournaments, however without a sponsor, BAV open and graded tournament ended up being very costly. Similar in 2022, we gave a lot to our members providing free lessons during the holidays and ordering new merchandise. Our high performance member Louisa Ma was also travelling a fair bit for tournaments and we covered portion of those expenses.

Hosting tournaments has been our biggest contributor in revenue as well as expenses. We knew the third tournament BAV Open and graded with no sponsor for prize money was going to be stretch financially. It was a risk we took in order for us to see if we could run it as our own without the label of it being sanctioned and basically whether people would show up. Increase of membership count can also be improved with new strategies and incentives to get people to sign up.

Feedback from parents were mainly positive. One suggested smaller teams to increase numbers if we were to host a similar event in the future. Or main goal was getting our members involved and introducing them to tournaments.

This event was a last-minute add-on hence the low number of entries and the short period of time to promote. Knowing the risk, we thought it would be a good opportunity to see whether we could run an event on our own and without the use of the Tournament Software program. Despite a number of challenges, we got positive feedback and interest from the players in coming back again to play.
