What was a great 3 days of fantastic competition amongst the country’s best players finished up with the finals of the 2016 Li-Ning Australian National Championships played at MSAC today.
We are very proud of our BAV alumni who featured in today’s finals, including a big championship win for Joy Lai in the Women’s Singles event, and for Matthew Chau in the Men’s Doubles with partner Sawan Serasinghe.
Representative player and sometimes coach of BAV, Ashwant Gobinathan, came just shy of winning the Men’s Singles, coming runner-up to Anthony Joe from Canberra. We wish to congratulate Anthony, who occasionally drops by to our training sessions, on his massive career achievement today.
Another shout out to Matthew Chau for being a semi-finalist in the Mixed Doubles event with partner Gronya Somerville. We also wish to applaud Gronya, who has also trained with us from time to time in the past, on winning the Women’s Doubles with her partner Setyana Mapasa.
Other honourable mentions go to BAV player and sometimes coach, Louisa Ma who was a semi-finalist in the Women’s Singles, and bringing back her brother and BAV coach, Boris Ma, to resurrect the Ma siblings pairing for the Mixed Doubles event. We also got to see BAV coach, Ericson Rusdianto in the Men’s Doubles events as well as BAV alumni, Andrew Paulet in the Men’s Singles and Men’s Doubles during the tournament.
All in all, it was an exciting 3 days for Badminton in Victoria and Australia, and we look forward to the next few days where some of our BAV players will represent our state of Victoria in the Ede Clendinnen Shield team event.
